Cyclone Melissa wreaks havoc in Jamaica: 7 dead: More than 25,000 in relief camps

  • Power outage in 77 percent of districts: Numerous houses collapsed: Many roads were submerged due to heavy rains: Many roads cracked

Dangerous Cyclone Melissa has caused widespread devastation south of Huyuba in the Caribbean Sea. This cyclone also had record-breaking winds of 170 mph. Due to this, power was out in 77 percent of the area. Because the electricity poles were broken. However, there were no deaths due to electrocution as the power supply from the power house was immediately shut down when this cyclone hit. But the roofs of most of the houses were blown off. Numerous houses collapsed.

Citing local media, Xinhua News Agency said that Cyclone Melis, which started on Wednesday night, has now crossed Cuba and moved northwards and on Thursday night (local time) it moved towards Bermuda.

This cyclone reminded us of Hurricane Otis in Mexico in 2023 and the terrible Hurricane Roy in the Philippines in 2021. This cyclone became very strong even before it hit the land.

The main reason behind the formation of cyclones is the high temperature on the land and the relatively cold temperature of the sea. Everyone knows that. But the latest research says that the increasing temperature of the ocean is also a major factor for this. The warming ocean gives additional energy to the storm. On the other hand, as the Earth’s atmosphere itself has warmed, the probability of cyclones forming and huge waves rising on the sea coast is increasing by 500 to 800 times.
