Exiled Tibetan Election Commission announces elections: Elections to be held in two phases

The ‘Tibet Election Commission’ on Tuesday announced the schedule for the elections to the Exiled Tibetan Parliament and the Exiled Tibetan Government. The elections to the Sikyong and Exiled Tibetan Parliament will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held on February 1 and the second phase on April 26, 2026. This will be the 18th election for the exiled Tibetans. Their election commission will take all steps to ensure that it is held in a fair manner.

The commission said that we hold elections every five years. The elections to the Sikyong (political leader) and the Exiled Tibetan Parliament will be held on the said dates.

The Tibetan Election Commission said in a press conference that not only Tibetans based in India, but also Tibetans living in exile around the world will ‘nominate’ their preferred candidates in the first phase of the election and ‘short-list’ them for the final election. Earlier on Friday, the ethical ‘code of conduct’ that will come into effect before the elections was also briefly explained to the journalists.

The tenth session of the 17th Tibetan Parliament in Exile concluded in the city of ‘Dharamshala’ on September 18. The current Prime Minister of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Dolwa Tsetung, said that during the September session, a ‘Tibetan-unity’ resolution was passed in which the serious situation prevailing in Tibet was discussed. The way in which the ‘dictator’ (Xi-Jinping) and his cronies are persecuting the people in Tibet was also discussed.
