Kane Williamson gets new responsibility in IPL : gets important position in Lucknow Super Giants

Teams have started formulating their strategies for the upcoming season even before the mini auction of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. In this context, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has taken a big decision. Former New Zealand captain and one of the best batsmen in the world, Kane Williamson, will now join LSG not as a player in IPL 2026, but as a strategic consultant. It is noteworthy that Williamson’s appointment has been made after Zaheer Khan resigned from the team’s mentorship.

35-year-old Kane Williamson is known for his excellent cricketing skills and calm leadership skills. He has represented New Zealand in 105 Tests, 173 ODIs and 93 T20 international matches. He has previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL.

Kane Williamson has not retired from international cricket yet. However, he turned down a contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to remain active in franchise cricket.

According to reports, the decision to bring Kane Williamson into the team was taken personally by RPSG Group Chairman and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka. Sanjiv Goenka met Williamson in London to discuss this strategic role. The process of including Williamson in the L&G team began about three months ago and the final decision was taken after discussions between the team owners, coach, captain and management.

Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer will continue as the head coach of LSG. Along with this, England’s Carl Crowe has been appointed as LSG’s spin bowling coach, who previously held the role with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The mini auction for IPL 2026 is expected to take place between December 13 and 15 this year. All teams will have to submit the final list of retained and released players by November 15. Williamson’s tactical experience can help LSG formulate auction tactics and make on-field decisions.
