The Liberian cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank after capsizing in the sea near Kochi, Kerala. The ship was carrying 640 containers, some of which were carrying highly hazardous cargoes including calcium carbide, diesel and furnace oil. The ship capsized, causing oil to leak from it. Taking the situation seriously, an immediate rescue operation was launched and all the crew members were rescued. All 24 crew members were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Navy. The ship had left for Kochi from Vizianagaram port in Kerala on May 23. On May 24, in the afternoon, it sank in the sea 38 nautical miles off the Kochi coast. The Marine Rescue Sub-Center (MRSC) of ICG in Kochi has started the rescue operation. In view of the incident, the Kerala State Disaster Management Department (SDMA) has sounded an alert. The department has asked the people to stay away from objects coming from the seashore. Do not touch them.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said that the ship sank due to water filling one of its holds. After which a rescue operation was launched and all the people were rescued. There were a total of 640 containers on the ship, out of which 12 containers contained calcium carbide. Apart from this, there were 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil on the ship.
