Nearly 50 people have died in severe flooding caused by heavy rain and snowfall in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. According to reports, severe cold weather caused rain and snow in some parts of the country, followed by devastating floods. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said, “Police have confirmed the death toll. The dead include six students who were swept away by floodwaters near a river on Tuesday. Four other students are still missing. The Eastern Cape province has been hit hardest by the floods. Many homes have been damaged and a large number of cars have been swept away by floodwaters.” South Africa is located at the southern tip of the African continent.
