US President Donald Trump on Friday (May 30) has reignited trade tensions with China. While Trump has been furious after the deal was made, he has claimed that Beijing has completely violated recent trade agreements. Trump’s statement came after an interview with US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant. Scott had said, ‘Trade-related discussions with China are somewhat stalled. Earlier this month, the US and China agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs imposed for 90 days after talks with high-ranking officials in Geneva. Following this agreement, the US decided to reduce tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 percent to 30 percent and China decided to reduce tariffs on US goods from 125 percent to 10 percent.’
The agreement between the US and China was intended to ease pressure on trade and supply chains. However, Trump, without providing any concrete reason, claimed that China had violated the agreement between the two. Experts in this regard believe that such a statement could be Trump’s strategy to put pressure on the negotiations by threatening high tariffs. Trump’s move is an attempt to show his domestic supporters that he will maintain a tough stance against China.
