The trial of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity has begun. The charges were formally filed at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Chief prosecutor Tajul Islam filed the charges with the tribunal. ICT prosecutor Ghazi Manowar Hossain Tamim told The Daily Star. On May 12, the tribunal’s investigative agency submitted its investigation report against Hasina.

Five charges of crimes against humanity were filed during the July 2024 protests. According to reports, more than 1,500 people were killed and more than 25,000 were injured.

Some militants from the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JUD) of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed have claimed that they played a role in the massive anti-government protests in Bangladesh last year.

This led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning from her post. According to PTI, these statements were made by JDU militants Saifullah Kasuri and Muzammil Hashmi during their speeches.
