Trump’s U-turn : removal of tariffs on coffee and key food items as Americans suffer due to inflation

US President Donald Trump made a major announcement on Friday, providing relief to American consumers. He has reduced import tariffs on coffee, tropical fruits and many other essential items. The White House’s decision comes at a time when efforts are underway to control rising costs for US consumers, which is considered a major and unexpected change in Trump’s trade policy.

Trump had previously adopted a policy of imposing tariffs on imported goods with the aim of promoting domestic production. But the decision to remove these tariffs on key food items of the American diet was taken after the recent mid-term elections. Economic concerns became a major issue in these elections, resulting in a victory for the Democrats. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One while on a trip to Florida, Trump said, “We have given some relief on some food items like coffee.”

When asked if his tariffs had increased prices for Americans, Donald Trump acknowledged that in some cases this may have happened, but most of the burden has been borne by other countries.

Despite Trump’s repeated claims that inflation has disappeared since he took office in January, inflation has remained high, putting pressure on household budgets. The administration argues that the tariffs have mainly helped raise government revenue. However, Democrats saw Friday’s tariff cuts as a tacit admission that these policies had hurt American consumers.

Trump faced criticism that tariffs imposed globally in April had increased the prices of many key food items. However, with the tariff cuts under the new executive order, many products will become cheaper for Americans.

The items on which tariffs have been removed mainly include tea, fruit juice, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and some fertilizers. Since most of these products are not made in the US, the removal of tariffs is expected to provide price relief to consumers.
