The US has announced a massive revocation of Chinese student visas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the State Department would work with the Department of Homeland Security.
Rubio said the visas of Chinese students who are affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or who are studying in technical fields would be revoked. He said, “We will further tighten the scrutiny of visa applications from China and Hong Kong in the future.”
The US claims that this decision is necessary for national security. The CCP can obtain sensitive information through students. This move will reduce the number of Chinese students in the US.
This, in turn, could further escalate tensions between the two countries. The decision comes at a time when the US government has banned new visa interviews for foreign students.
Also, the Japanese government has asked the country’s universities to consider admitting students returning from the US.
