We are preparing to make a trade deal with India: Trump’s claim again

  • Statement of the American President in the South Korean capital
  • India-EU agreed to continue talks on steel, auto, carbon tax in FTA talks

American President Trump has again claimed that we are preparing to make a trade deal with India. However, since Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had also said this a few days ago, the possibility of a trade deal between the two countries has increased. It would not be surprising if it is announced by Christmas. Trump may even consider it a Christmas gift from India.

It is believed that during the annual meeting of ASEAN countries, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and American Marco Rubio held talks in Kuala Lumpur regarding the proposed trade agreement. There was a long discussion between the two regarding the trade talks. It is believed that a lot of progress has been made in it. However, the US has not yet given any indication of removing the 25% duty imposed on India for buying crude from Russia. Meanwhile, India and the European Union have agreed to hold extensive discussions on steel, auto, carbon tax and highly sensitive sectors so that a trade deal can be done before the end of 2025. India has favoured a transparent framework to increase trade with the EU. Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said this when he went to Brussels on a three-day visit to Europe. He met the EU’s Trade and Economic Commissioner there. With agreement on these issues, the FTA between the two is expected to be done by the end of the year.

According to the official, India-US trade deal is very close. At the Berlin Global Dialogue, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that we do not do any deal in a hurry or that no one can make a deal with us by putting a gun to our head. The first round of trade talks between India and the US has completed five phases.
